What is SAR?

The SAR Pledge

“We descendants of the heroes of the American Revolution, who by their sacrifices established the United States of America, reaffirm our faith in the principles of Liberty and our Constitutional Republic, and solemnly pledge ourselves to defend them against every foe”

The National Society of the Sons of the Revolution (NSSAR or SAR), the largest male lineage organization in the U.S., consists of 50 societies with more than 500 local chapters, several international societies (including Canada, France, Germany, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom), and over 37,000 members. Prominent SAR members include sixteen U.S. Presidents, Sir Winston Churchill, and Kings Juan Carlos I and Felipe VI of Spain.

SAR members have also answered their country’s call in every major American conflict beginning with the battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, and continuing to the present day, including Operation Desert Storm, Bosnia, and the recent actions in Afghanistan and Iraq. SAR members have received the highest awards America can bestow, including the Medal of Honor.

For further information and a brief overview of the SAR’s history, activities, and community involvement, visitors may review the organization’s “To Help Preserve a Precious Heritage” brochure. SAR members wanting to print or distribute this publication at local meetings or community events are welcome to do so; if used online or elsewhere, please reference the National SAR and the appropriate sources.

NSSAR is a Congressionally Chartered Organization and is exempt from federal income taxes under the provisions of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
